Nakatakdang bilhin ng New York Times ang sports news website na ‘The Athletic’. Ito ay bilang isang diversification drive ng nasabing iconic US newspaper.
“Acquiring The Athletic puts us in a position to be a global leader in sports journalism and offer English speakers around the world. Another reason to turn to the Times Company to meet their daily news and life needs,” saad ni New York Times chief Meredith Kopit Levien.
Sa halagang $550-million, babayaran ng newspaper company ang The Athletic. Na naging lider sa mga sports coverage s aloob ng 6 na taon. Ayon pa kay Levien, ang pagkamada na ito ay makatutulong sa goals ng NYT. Na maaabot ang target na 10-million subscribers sa kasalukuyang 8 million.
Ang Athletic naman ay mayroong 1.2 subscribers sa katapusan ng taong 2021. Na itinatag nooong noong January 2016 nina Adam Hansmann at Alex Mather.
