Nasabat ng Bureau of Customs (BOC), kasama ang PNP, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), at iba pang enforcement units, ang humigit-kumulang 150 master cases ng smuggled cigarettes na tinatayang nagkakahalaga ng ₱5,932,790 sa isang operasyon sa Makilala, North Cotabato nitong Agosto 14, 2025.
Ayon sa ulat, nakatanggap ng impormasyon ang mga awtoridad tungkol sa isang wing van truck na na-stall sa lugar. Nang inspeksyunin, natuklasan ang mga kaha ng sigarilyo na nakatago sa ilalim ng ipa ng palay. Agad na dinala ang sasakyan at ang mga operator nito sa General Santos City para sa imbentaryo at mas malalim na imbestigasyon.
Ang mga nakumpiskang sigarilyo at ang wing van ay isasailalim sa kustodiya ng BOC–General Santos sa pamamagitan ng Enforcement and Security Service (ESS). Samantala, hawak na ng PNP ang dalawang indibidwal na sakay ng truck para sa pagsasampa ng kaso.
Maglalabas ng Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) ang BOC laban sa mga lumabag sa Sections 400, 117, at 1113 ng Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA), kaugnay ng regulasyon ng National Tobacco Administration (NTA).
Binigyang-diin ni BOC Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno ang direktiba ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. laban sa smuggling:
“From day one, the President’s call was straightforward — eliminate corruption, combat smuggling, and uphold good governance. Working in full harmony with our partner enforcement units, we will continue to crack down on illicit cigarettes, safeguard legitimate tobacco producers and retailers, and ensure that government revenues are preserved for programs that directly benefit the people.”
Dagdag pa ni Acting Subport Collector Ralph S. Rojo, sa ilalim ng gabay ni Port of Davao District Collector Maita S. Acevedo:
“The Bureau of Customs is dedicated to promoting legitimate trade and protecting the welfare of the Filipinos, hence, we will persist in strengthening our enforcement efforts.” (ARSENIO TAN)
