NAKIPAGSANIB-PUWERSA ang Manila Electric Company (Meralco), ang pinakamalaking pribadong power distributor sa bansa, sa US-based Itron, Inc. upang pabilisin ang implementasyon ng smart grid modernization o makabagong sistema ng suplay ng kuryente.
Ang Itron ay isang pandaigdigang lider sa energy at water resource management, na tumutulong sa higit 100 bansa sa pamamagitan ng smart networks, software, services, meters, at sensors upang masigurong ligtas, episyente, at maaasahan ang mga serbisyo ng kritikal na imprastraktura.
Ang naturang partnership ay malaking hakbang sa Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program ng Meralco, na layuning magtayo ng mas matalino, mas mabilis, at mas customer-centered na energy system, kaakibat ng paglipat ng bansa sa digital economy at sustainable energy.
Ayon kay John Marcolini, Senior Vice President ng Itron Networked Solutions, ipinagmamalaki nilang maging bahagi ng modernisasyon ng Meralco.

The solution is designed to support multiple meter brands, giving Meralco the flexibility to scale without vendor lock-in,” ani Marcolini.
Ang AMI solution ng Itron, bahagi ng Grid Edge Intelligence portfolio, ay gumagamit ng open IPv6-based network na pinagsasama ang Gen5 mesh at cellular technologies.
Sa pamamagitan nito, nagiging posible ang smart metering at iba pang smart city applications tulad ng integration ng renewable energy, electric vehicles, at mas mabilis na outage management.
Sa implementasyon ng Itron AMI, magkakaroon ng real-time, two-way communication sa pagitan ng Meralco at ng mga kustomer nito, na magreresulta sa mas mabilis na pagresponde sa brownout, mas tumpak na billing, at mas malinaw na monitoring ng konsumo.
Sa unang yugto ng proyekto, 73,000 endpoints sa Metro Manila ang saklaw ng Itron’s AMI solution na may planong palawakin sa lahat ng lugar na sakop ng Meralco sa mga susunod na taon.
