DOST BALIK SCIENTIST NAKADISKUBRE NG ANTIMICROBIAL COMPOUNDS PARA SA BAGONG ANTIBIOTICS MULA SA PHILIPPINE BIODIVERSITY

NAKATUKLAS ang Filipino scientist ng antimicrobial compounds mula sa biodiversity ng bansa na maaring magamit upang makabuo ng mga bagong antibiotics, ayon sa Department of Technology.

Ang pagkakadiskubre ay isinagawa ni Dr. Julius Adam Lopez, na bahagi ng DOST’s Balik Scientist program.

Pinangunahan ni Dr. Lopez ang initiative sa University of San Agustin sa Iloilo City.


Si Dr. Si Lopez, na ang mga trabaho ay nakatuon sa mga inisyatibo sa pagbuo ng kakayahan sa paghawak ng teknolohiya ng nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sa mga mananaliksik ng Pilipinas sa rehiyon ng Visayas at Mindanao, ang nanguna sa inisyatibo sa University of San Agustin sa Iloilo City.

“Through the initiative, Dr. Lopez was able to isolate and elucidate the structure of novel and/or bioactive compounds from cultured marine actinomycetes in the biobank of University of San Agustin using the NMR,”  ayon sa DOST.

“The scientist used the NMR to purify the marine samples and identify β-lactamase inhibitors which prevent antimicrobial resistance and improve efficacy of antimicrobial treatment,” paliwanag pa ng ahensiya.


Sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng mga advanced na pamamaraan ng NMR, natuklasan ng naturang scientis ang pagtuklas ng bagong cytotoxic cyanobacteria na tinatawag na wewakazole B at bagong fatty acids amides, columbamides na siyang fundamental blueprint o structures para sa ilang mga gamot.

Isinagawa rin ang pag-aaral sa ilalim ng Philippine marine (PHILMARINE) – beta-lactamase inihibitor (BLI) project sa University of San Agustin, dagdag ng ahensiya.

“Through the collaboration with the university, Dr. Lopez was also able to develop an NMR training module with both theoretical and practical aspects of the NMR spectroscopy,” ayon pa sa DOST.


Ipinahayag ng DOST chief na si Renato Solidum Jr. ang kanyang tuwa tungkol sa potensyal na epekto ng pag-aaral ng mga Pilipino sa paggamit ng NMR.

“Advancing our efforts in drug discovery and development and building the NMR competency within the Visayas and Mindanao regions shall help us address perplexing health issues and opens avenues for locally available, accessible, and practical solutions,” saad ni Solidum.


“The NMR is a powerful tool to study molecular structures and dynamics of complex systems and widen our understanding of the world we live in which includes discoveries of anti-cancer drugs and antibiotics,” dagdag pa nito.
