DOTr nakahandang tumulong sa mga operator… 400% HIRIT NA FARE-HIKE SA JEEP

Magbibigay ng tulong ang Department of Transportation (DOTr) sa mga operator upang tugunan ang napapaulat na nakaambang hirit na 400% sa pamasahe sa mga jeep dahil sa PUV modernization program.

Ito’y matapos sabihin ng non-profit organization na IBON foundation na “indifferent” ang administrasyon sa kalagayan ng transport sector.

“The worsening privatization and corporatization threatens to raise jeepney fares by 300% to 400% over the next few years,” anang IBON.

Sinabi ni DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan na maaaring ikinababahala ng IBON ang Step 2 ng PUV modernization program, kung saan papalitan ang traditional jeepneys ng modern jeepneys.

Iginiit niya na binago ng gobyerno ang programa upang ibsan ang “financial burden” ng jeepney operators sa pagpapalit ng kanilang units ng mas modernisadong modelo.

“First, we have increased the subsidy. At the start we were only giving P80,000 per unit, that was increased to P160,000 per unit. Now, it is between P200,000 to P300,000 depending on the type of jeepney that you are modernizing into,” ani Batan sa isang panayam.

Nagkakahalaga ang modernized jeepney ng halos P2.3 milyon hanggang P2.8 milyon kada unit.

“Number 2, we’ve continued working with our government banks, Landbank, [Development Bank of the Philippines], to simplify the procedures for availing of cheap financing,” ayon pa kay Batan.

Nang tanungin ukol sa 6% interest rate na masyadong mataas para sa jeepney operators, inihayag ng DOTr official na nakikipag-ugnayan ang pamahalaan sa private lenders upang lumikha ng kompetisyon para sa mas murang interest rates.

“The interest rates are subject to banking regulations because the banks also have to protect the interest of their depositors,” aniya.

“What we are doing now is expanding the pool of lenders to the sector by inviting private banks to also participate,” dagdag ni Batan.

Nakatakda ang deadline para sa konsolidasyon ng jeepney operators sa ilalim ng PUV modernization sa December 31, 2023, na hindi na palalawigin ayon kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Base sa DOTr, halos 70% ng jeepney operators ang nakatalima na sa consolidation process.
