Lusot sa plunder pero sabit sa bribery… JINGGOY ESTRADA MANANATILING SENADOR

MANANATILING senador pa rin si Jinggoy Estrada hanggang hindi pa ganap na pinal ang desisyon ng Sandiganbayan Fifth Division kaugnay sa kanyang kaso, ayon kay Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri.

Pinawalang-sala ng anti-graft court si Estrada sa kasong plunder kaugnay sa pork barrel scam, pero guilty naman ang hatol sa kanya sa one count ng direct bribery at two counts ng indirect bribery.

Sa direct bribery, pinatawan si Estrada ng parusang pagkakakulong ng walo hanggang siyam na taon, at apat na buwan. Kasama ang temporary disqualification, temporary absolute disqualification at perpetual special disqualification sa pagboto. Pinagbabayad din ang senador ng multang P3 milyon.

Sa indirect bribery, pinatawan si Estrada ng parusang pagkakakulong ng dalawang taon at apat na buwan, hanggang tatlong taon, anim na buwan at 20 araw para sa bawat “count,” o hanggang anim na taon.

 “The Senate takes due notice and respects the Sandiganbayan decision on the cases filed against Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, a sitting senator of the Philippines with a mandate emanating from over 15 million voters,” saad ni Zubiri.

Gayunpaman, binanggit ni Zubiri na mayroon pa ring mga legal na remedyo na magagamit ni Estrada sa ilalim ng umiiral na batas.

“Until and unless the decision becomes final and executory, Sen. Jinggoy is duty-bound to continue performing his functions as Senator of the Republic,” ani Zubiri.

Ayon pa kay Zubiri maaring maghain ng motion for reconsideration si Estrada o umapela sa Korte Suprema.

We believe that Senator Jinggoy has the right to pursue all legal remedies concerning the verdict. It is not yet final and executory. Thus, he can continue to fulfill his duties as a duly elected Senator of the Republic,” sabi pa ni Zubiri.

Samantala, ganito din ang posisyon ni Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva at aniya patuloy na magagampanan ni Estrada ang kanyang mga tungkulin bilang mambabatas ng Mataas na Kapulungan ng Kongreso. “We firmly believe that he will continue to stay focused on his job and carry out his duties and responsibilities in service to the nation,” sabi pa ni Villanueva.
