Biktima ng pandemya: 107-year-old school sa Maynila tuluyan nang isasara sa 2020

Inanunsiyo ng 107-years-old na College of the Holy Spirit Manila (CHSM) na ititigil na nito ang operasyon sa taong 2022 dahil sa sari-saring hamon na kinaharap ng paaralan kabilang ang COVID-19 pandemic.

Sa isang liham na may petsang October 28, 2020, ipinahayag ni Sister Carmelita Victoria ng Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit na bagaman at nagawang makaraos ng paaralan sa mga lumipas na taon dahil sa suporta ng mga alumni, faculty at staff, ang mga hamong kinaharap nito kasama ng education sector ng bansa ay patuloy na nagiging masalimuot nitong huling dekadang nagdaan.

“After consultation with representatives of our stakeholders, and a deep and prayerful process of discernment, we are now even more convinced that the Holy Spirit is speaking clearly to us through the signs of the times, compelling us to make this extremely difficult decision to close CHSM at the end of the academic year 2021-2022,” saad ni Sr. Carmelita Victoria sa liham.

“In the last 10 years… the challenges facing CHSM and the wider education sector have become increasingly complex, making it difficult for CHSM to attract new students and ramp up enrolment to make the school viable,” patuloy pa niya.

Saad ng madre, ang challenging environment na kinaharap ng mga private schools ay resulta ng polisiya ng gobyerno sa K-12; libreng tuition fee sa mga state colleges and universities, local universities and colleges, at state-run technical and vocational institutions; at ang malaking umento sa suweldo ng mga public school teachers kumpara sa counterparts nila sa private schools.

Ang mga hamong ito na kinaharap ng CHSM at ng iba pang mga private schools ay pinalala pa ng COVID-19 pandemic, ayon pa kay Sr. Carmelita Victoria.

“The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation. The reduction or loss in family income, mobility restrictions and social distancing requirements, and the new demands of distance learning have adversely affected enrollment, not only in CHSM, but in most private schools as well,” aniya sa kanyang sulat.

Nagtakda ng mga pakikipagpulong ang CHSM ngayong buwan sa mga faculty, staff, mga magulang at mga alumni upang mapag-usapan ang napipintong pagsasara ng paaralan.

Tatapusin na lang ng CHSM ang school year 2021-2022 upang maka-graduate ang kasalukuyang batch ng Grade 11 students sa Senior High School at ang nasa third year college.
